Tie dye fabric was originally developed for use as an industrial fabric dye. The name tie dye is derived from the fact that it is soluble in a solution of tannic acid and water. Tannic acid is a type of acid commonly used as an industrial soil reclamation product. In the early nineteen twenties a number of textile dye manufacturers located in New England began experimenting with the utilization of this particular acid as a means of adding color to fabric. As a result the term tie dye was born.

The tie dye cotton fabric  are made in the form of garments, bedding, draperies, quilts, tablecloths, curtains, and slip covers. It was not until the nineteen fifties that tie dye fabric became popular with home decorators. It was found to have an adhesive quality similar to rubber stamps. Because of the way it added colors easily and could be applied with a variety of designs, tie dye fabric became very popular for use as decorative fabric dye for the home. The process of tying colors together did not take away from the brightness of the fabric, and in fact made the fabric more vivid.

The process of tying the fabrics together was similar to what is done with regular textile dye. For tie dye fabric in the dye was applied to the fabric with a brush or a sponge. The fabric would then be left to dry. The resulting product was a light-colored woven fabric that appeared to be dyed for a short period of time.

Over a period of years the tie dye fabric became more popular as people realized that the dye was easier to work with than other types of fabric dye. There was also a trend toward tie dye clothing. During the nineteen sixties and the seventies fashionable accessories were made in the tie dye fabric pattern. Ties, shirts, pants, and dresses were the primary items tied in these fabrics. During the eighties and the nineties casual wear was made in the same style. The fabric was still widely used during the 1990s as people searched for ways to keep warm and fashionable.

Today, tie dye fabric Los Angeles  is popular in men's fashion and in the making of clothing accessories, such as ties. Many ties made today use this type of fabric. It is no longer considered trendy to wear a tie dye fabric garment. Instead, people continue to wear the light-colored clothing that was once popular, but with a different pattern and design on the fabric. There is even a fashion niche market for tie dye tees designed specifically for women.

Today there are many companies that make and sell tie dye fabrics. Some of these companies specialize in the manufacture of men's, women's, and children's clothing accessories. Some manufacturers are well known and have a long history of manufacturing fine quality tie dye fabrics. These companies include names such as American Racing Blue, Blazer, and Blazer Stripes, Brocard Stripes, and Club Gazelles. These companies also produce ties that can be worn by both men and women.
